An international team directed by researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, with participation from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, has managed to create an entanglement of 103 dimensions with only two photons. The record had been established at 11 dimensions.
The states in which elementary particles, such as photons, can be found have properties which are beyond common sense. Superpositions are produced, such as the possibility of being in two places at once, which defies intuition. In addition, when two particles are entangled a connection is generated: measuring the state of one (whether they are in one place or another, or spinning one way or another, for example) affects the state of the other particle instantly, no matter how far away from each other they are.
Scientists have spent years combining both properties to construct networks of entangled particles in a state of superposition. This in turn allows constructing quantum computers capable of operating at unimaginable speeds, encrypting information with total security and conducting experiments in quantum mechanics which would be impossible to carry out otherwise.
In an article published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), scientists described how they managed to achieve a quantum entanglement with a minimum of 103 dimensions with only two particles. "We have two Schrödinger cats which could be alive, dead, or in 101 other states simultaneously", Huber jokes, "plus, they are entangled in such a way that what happens to one immediately affects the other". The results implies a record in quantum entanglements of multiple dimensions with two particles, established until now at 11 dimensions.
"This high dimension quantum entanglement offers great potential for quantum information applications. In cryptography, for example, our method would allow us to maintain the security of the information in realistic situations, with noise and interference. In addition, the discovery could facilitate the experimental development of quantum computers, since this would be an easier way of obtaining high dimensions of entanglement with few particles", explains UAB researcher Marcus Huber.
Now that the results demonstrate that obtaining high dimension [nexuses] is accessible, scientists conclude in the article that the next step will be to search how they can experimentally control these hundreds of spatial modes of the photons in order to conduct quantum computer operations.
"We've never been able to step inside the structures of the brain and see it in this way," Gazzaley said. "It's biofeedback on the next level."
Being able to literally watch your own brain activity is not only fun, it has therapeutic potential. For example, people with traumatic brain injury or other neurological problems could visualize how their condition is affecting their brain activity, and learn to correct it.
So far, the team has focused on visualizing one brain at a time. But Rosedale foresees a day when two people could interact virtually in a way that telegraphs their inner state.

Scientists say they have
extraordinary new evidence to support a Big Seed Theory for the origin of the
Universe.
Researchers believe they have found the signal left in the sky by the
super-rapid expansion of space that must have occurred just fractions of a
second after everything came into being.
It takes the form of a distinctive twist in the oldest light detectable with
telescopes.
The aim has been to try to find a residual marker for "inflation" - the idea
that the cosmos experienced an exponential growth spurt in its first trillionth,
of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second.
Theory holds that this would have taken the infant Universe from something
unimaginably small to something about the size of a marble. Space has continued
to expand for the nearly 14 billion years since.
Speaking at the press conference to announce the results, Prof John Kovac of the
Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, and a leader of the BICEP2
collaboration, said: "This is opening a window on what we believe to be a new
regime of physics - the physics of what happened in the first unbelievably tiny
fraction of a second in the Universe."
British scientist Dr Jo Dunkley, who has been searching through data from the European Planck
space telescope for a B-mode signal, commented: "I can't tell you how
exciting this is. Inflation sounds like a crazy idea, but everything that is
important, everything we see today - the galaxies, the stars, the planets - was
imprinted at that moment, in less than a trillionth of a second. If this is
confirmed, it's huge."

Scientists suspect that inside Europa, one of the icy moons of Jupiter, reservoirs of liquid water exists, the essential element for life on Earth. This theory emerged from information obtained on the Voyager and Galileo missions, which also registered fractures and `chaotic´ terrains associated to reddish materials, which contrast with the glacial white of the dominant water ice of the surface.
"Either way, our experiments show that certain characteristics of Europa´s surface regarding its composition, morphology and topography might be explained if a saline aqueous medium is involved, which has important consequences for living beings on Earth," concludes the researcher.

The United States and Israel signed an agreement last week to “continue support of the production of the Iron Dome weapon system,” according to a statement over the weekend from the Missile Defense Agency of the US Department of Defense.
The agreement, concluded last Wednesday, “ensures continued US funding for procurement of Iron Dome systems and interceptors, and provides for significant co-production opportunities for US industry. Under the terms of the agreement, $429 million will be transferred immediately to Israel to support Iron Dome procurement.”
The statement cites the “strategic value” of the agreement for both Israel and the US. “Israel will obtain valuable resources to contribute to its defense and US industry will receive meaningful co-production opportunities for Iron Dome components,” it reads.
US funding for joint US-Israeli missile defense programs came under scrutiny last week amid reports that US President Barack Obama’s budget for fiscal year 2015 gutted funding for the US-Israel missile defense partnership.
But the funding for missile defense was intact, Jewish groups said last Thursday, adding that it was the responsibility of Congress, not the White House, to bring funding up to previous years’ levels.
In the presidential budget proposal submitted for fiscal year 2014, the amount requested for missile defense projects, including the Arrow programs, was $95 million, while this year, the president requested that Congress approve $96.8 million for the same budget item.
An AIPAC source told The Times of Israel that the 2015 budget request is consistent with previous budget submissions and that the organization would work with Congress as the process moves forward to ensure that funding levels continue to support American-Israeli missile defense programs.
In previous years, including 2014, Congress added additional funds beyond those requested by the president.
In 2014, Congress hiked up funding to over $268 million, and one legislative analyst said that this year’s final number would be higher than that.
Unlike the Arrow and David’s Sling programs, Iron Dome is not a joint US-Israeli program, but an Israeli-developed system whose US parts procurement is funded by the American government.
By a resounding vote of 410-1, the House on March 5 passed the United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2014 (H.R. 938), which dramatically strengthens the strategic partnership between the United States and Israel as they work to confront new threats and challenges in the Middle East. The Senate version of the bill (S. 462) remains pending.
The legislation — authored by Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) and Ted Deutch (D-FL) in the House and by Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Roy Blunt (R-MO) in the Senate — designates Israel a “major strategic partner” of the United States. It also expands U.S.-Israel cooperation in a variety of arenas, including defense, intelligence, homeland security, energy, science and trade.

“The Earth’s magnetic field protects life on the surface from the full impact of these solar outbursts,” says John Foster, associate director of MIT’s Haystack Observatory. “Reconnection strips away some of our magnetic shield and lets energy leak in, giving us large, violent storms. These plasmas get pulled into space and slow down the reconnection process, so the impact of the sun on the Earth is less violent.”
Foster says the observations from space validate measurements from the ground. What’s more, the combination of space and ground-based data give a highly detailed picture of a natural defensive mechanism in the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Jim Green, NASA's planetary science chief, said there's no reason to think there isn't life on Europa, the sixth-closest moon to the planet Jupiter and the sixth-largest moon in the solar system. And he can't wait to find out.
"We've been thinking about Europa for quite a few years. Then in December things had to change," Green told Computerworld. "The ocean there is protected by an ice shell and there's no reason that we believe life couldn't have been generated on Europa. The real search for aliens is in this solar system. To determine if life exists outside the bounds of Earth's gravity, it's really in places like Mars and Europa and maybe Titan."
If NASA does find life -- whether it's microbial or other life forms -- that will have major repercussions on what we expect about life outside the bounds of Earth.
"It's a really dynamic region," said Green. "It's a fabulous water world. We believe life probably started in water on this planet. Having billions of years of water on Europa, tells us there's a good chance there's life on Europa now."

Comets may have brought much of the water to our home world. The carbon-rich "dirty snowballs" could also have seeded our world with the first precursors to life. This could mean the best sign of life in the system is a cloud of gas, poisonous to humans. The presence of carbon monoxide shows evidence of frequent cometary collisions, which could bring water and organic material to worlds within the system.

This meant that on Friday, the only identifiably Russian force descending on the Crimea were the Night Wolves.

In 2012, when he came to Ukraine on an official visit, he spent several hours riding around the Crimea with Zaldostanov and the Night Wolves while President Yanukovych was kept waiting for him in Kiev.
Putin’s ride with the Night Wolves in 2012 took him to the city of Sevastopol, which many Russians consider holy ground.
“We are here to defend our country, or at least the parts of it that remains ours. We will defend it from the fascists who have come to power. So let it be known to all of them. Wherever we are, wherever the Night Wolves are, that should be considered Russia.”
In his view, “Russia” would include a swathe of Ukraine reaching far beyond the Crimea. On Saturday morning, the Night Wolves are organizing a massive motorcycle column that will ride from the northeast of Ukraine all the way along its eastern edge, covering nearly all of the Russian-speaking regions of the country. By evening, they will end up in Crimea, where they plan to deliver various supplies, including “means of self-defense,” to the ethnic Russian militias on the peninsula. Although Zaldostanov declined to elaborate on what these items would be, he said “they will be enough to make the Russian people here believe that the motherland has not forgotten them.”
