Reflecting dissatisfaction with the Republican and Democratic parties, the results of a new Gallup poll showed that a majority of Americans continue to say a third majority political party is needed.
The poll found that 58 percent think the two major parties do such a poor job of representing the American people that a third major party is needed. The number is little changed from a high of 60 percent last year.
Just thirty-five percent of Americans think the Republican and Democratic parties do an adequate job of representing the people, although that number is up from 26 percent a year ago.
Gallup noted that a majority has typically called for a third party since 2007, with the only two exceptions occurring in the fall of the 2008 and 2012 presidential election years.
As might be expected, the poll found that political independents show a far greater preference for a third political party.
Seventy-one percent of independents said a third party is needed, compared with 47 percent of Democrats and 46 percent of Republicans.
Gallup Poll Managing Editor Jeffrey Jones, said, "Although Americans express a desire for a viable alternative to the Democratic and Republican parties, third political parties have had little success in American politics."
"Americans' preference for a third party may reflect their frustration with the way the Republican and Democratic parties are performing, as well as the idea that the system ought to be open to new parties, regardless of whether this is viable in practice," he added.
The Gallup survey of 1,017 adults was conducted September 4th through 7th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
