New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio continued his trip in Italy Monday, meeting with the top aide to Pope Francis, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican secretary of state.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said the two explored approaches to migration.
Pope Francis has called for "urgent intervention" to protect migrant minors crossing into the United States on their own.
Earlier this month, De Blasio signed a measure offering ID cards to city residents regardless of immigration status.
De Blasio is also scheduled to meet Monday with Italy's foreign affairs minister, Federica Mogherini.
On Sunday, the first day of his family vacation, the Mayor and first family met with his Roman counterpart, Ignazio Marino, and took a moment to wave to cameras from a balcony overlooking the ancient Forum.
De Blasio told reporters after meeting Marino that he "found a new brother," and recalled the strong ties between Rome and New York.
Earlier, the De Blasio family stopped by a cafe on Piazza Navona for a granita al caffe - an iced coffee drink popular on hot summer days.
De Blasio's much-discussed family holiday was delayed by a day so the mayor could wrap up some city business. He is planning to visit Venice, Naples and the villages where his grandparents grew up during the stay.
